Some new snow overnight and a beautiful sunny day – spring time is great fun!

There is a dusting of new snow across the resort and even down here in the village today. 5cm is reported for Yamabiko which should make for very nice conditions on piste this morning. Off piste will still be hard and uneven. Strong winds and very warm conditions are predicted for tomorrow followed by light to moderate snow through to the middle of next week. This will probably fall as rain on the lower half of the resort but should be lots of fun up higher.

New Snow (Village): 3 cm
Weather: Light northwesterly breeze and light snow showers with sunny periods.  Excellent visibility higher up and cloudy conditions on the lower slopes.

The old and the new

A vending machine lights the way to one of Nozawa’s 13 “soto-yu” free public bath houses

After a warm sunny morning clouds moved in and light snow has begun to fall even down here in the village. A total of around 15cm is predicted to fall by tomorrow morning when conditions should clear making way for a mostly sunny day. Stronger winds and very warm conditions are forecast for Saturday with an expected maximum of around 16 degrees C in the village, before more cold weather and snow on Sunday. Definitely spring weather patterns now so plenty of sunshine and still over 2 meters of snow up on Yamabiko making for plenty of fun sliding.

Weather: Very light winds bringing clouds and snow in the afternoon which will decrease visibility considerably.

A few images from Nozawa today…

Great spring skiing today with fresh snow and firm fast runs up high and corn-tastic goodness down lower!

10cm of new snow has fallen overnight on Uenodaira and 3cm up on Yamabiko with flakes continuing to fall as I type. Temperatures are much colder today with an expected maximum of -6 up the top and 2 in the village. Warmer conditions again tomorrow with a mixture of snow and rain at lower altitudes then cold again on Friday before a balmy Saturday with an expected top of 14 degrees here in the village.

Weather: Moderately strong westerly winds. Light snow and low cloud affecting visibility.

Foggy wet conditions on the hill today, with a moderately strong westerly wind as well making for fairly poor sliding conditions. Temperatures are forecast to drop over the course of the day with snow predicted tonight even down here in the village. It won’t be much but hopefully enough to cover over the rain and sand effected surface we are faced with at the moment.

Sunset Panorama

Overcast conditions here in Nozawa today and this morning’s light southwesterly has strengthened considerably already causing the closure of the Nagasaka gondola, Yamabiko lifts and the Uenodaira quad lift as well. Rain is expected from this afternoon, although it should turn to snow on the higher slopes from tonight. Light snow and colder temperatures are predicted for most of the week ahead with heavier snowfalls on Thursday night before warmer conditions on the weekend.

Weather: Light southwesterly winds this morning strengthening throughout the day to near gale force by night time.  Temperatures well above zero and rain expected.

Views of Mt. Myoko from Nozawa

Magnificent sunny spring weather here in Nozawa today, with stunning views of Mt. Myoko from various vantage points around the slopes as seen above. Almost no wind and fairly cool temperatures up on Yamabiko completed the scene nicely and made for some excellent skiing and boarding today. From tomorrow the winds are expected to strengthen and turn southerly, bringing warmer temperatures and moderate to heavy rain. That shouldn’t last long though, with cloudy conditions and light snow forecast for the rest of the week.

Weather: Very light westerly wind, clear skies and stunning views across the surrounding valleys.

Official statistics:

It’s a rainy day here in Nozawa, although it is snowing higher up in the resort. It is currently a few degrees above freezing here and there is a moderate westerly wind. Things should clear up a bit by tomorrow with the possibility of a sunny afternoon on the slopes. Monday is forecast to be much warmer with a southwesterly wind strengthening throughout the day before rain in the afternoon turning to snow over night.
