Well, it happened – the dreaded R….. ‘rain’ ….. from last night and throughout the day today there has been light rain and drizzle down in the village of Akakura Onsen and fairly thick cloud or fog as well. As such I have no news from the mountain proper, but hopefully it was snowing up there for some of the time at least!

Forecasts are showing the temperature dropping by tonight and bringing snow down to village level with moderate falls predicted overnight. Light snow and snow showers are forecast for the rest of the week before a sunny Saturday.

After a stunning sunny morning the clouds have rolled in this afternoon, and with the dreaded southerly winds bringing warmer temperatures the treat of rain is looming this evening. It should be falling as snow higher up in the resorts but it won’t be the lightest snow ever.

BELOW: Kumi-chan enjoys some sunny sliding

Temperatures will fall again throughout the day tomorrow, with the rain turning to snow again by lunchtime. Light snow and snow showers are forecast for the rest of the week.

Just a dusting of snow overnight and promising patches of sunshine earlier on today, but the wind picked up and the weather closed in as the day progressed. Some lifts were closed due to the high winds, and visibility was poor at times but for the most part it was a good day on the hill with great snow conditions and still some fresh turns to be found if you know where to look!

Light snow and snow showers are forecast throughout tonight and into tomorrow before a sunny Monday morning with warmer temperatures. With that, there is rain still forecast for the lower slopes, heaviest on Monday night. Then a return to the snowy conditions is predicted, with the heaviest falls coming in Thursday evening.

There was about 30cm of new snow across the Myoko resorts today and fantastic sunny conditions for sliding. Temperatures stayed nice and low so the snow is still in good condition. The powder has compacted considerably making it much easier to get around, and with very few people on the hill today there were lots of fresh lines right up until last lifts.

Light snow and snow showers are forecast into tomorrow before clear conditions on Sunday. Monday is looking clear but quite warm, with the threat of rain at lower altitudes looming again, but by Tuesday afternoon things should get colder again and more snow is forecast.

A beautiful sunny day today in Akakura Onsen but the wind was blowing pretty hard and this kept many of the Myoko resorts from opening lifts. Besides, you know you’ve got some snow clearing to catch up on when the windows on the third floor of the hotel are starting to get buried and you can walk onto the roof….

Moderately heavy snow is forecast for tonight, followed by a partly cloudy morning then light snow in the evening and into Saturday before a sunny Sunday morning. Things will warm up a bit by Monday with southwesterly winds but stronger westerly winds will bring back the cold and snow from Monday night onwards. Surely not more heavy snow…..

Strong winds overnight moved a lot of snow around so ut’s a bit hard to tell what’s new but the resorts are reporting up to 40cm has fallen. Temperatures are still very cold and more snow and fairly strong westerly winds are forecast for the next few days.

The constant snow clearing is starting to take it’s toll on people around Myoko with lots of tired faces and even the hardened powder junkies are starting to say “enough?” but that said, all will be forgiven with a few nice deep powder turns!

Another morning of snow clearing at Hotel Mumon, but only about 35cm today…. ONLY! As usual the biggest overnight snowfall was recorded at Seki Onsen where 80cm was to be found. For the first time in a long time there were glimpses of blue sky and not too many flakes falling during the day, meaning lots of people out clearing away the chaos from the last few days of heavy snow.

If the forecasts are right, it’s just the eye of the storm so to speak, with more snow forecast for tonight and heavy snow coming again from tomorrow night into Wednesday and Thursday. Friday looks like another break in the weather before another dump on Friday night. This really is turning in to a season to remember….

Another day, another dump – the extraordinary snow continues in Myoko! 30~60cm across the resorts again today, although the weekend has brought sliders out in force and there is a lot more competition for the fresh tracks.

This is getting a little ridiculous – another 30~80cm of new snow today, on top of the last two days of about the same…. needless to say the chore of snow clearing is a bit like a hamster in a wheel at the moment, and even the sliding is more like swimming, but hey it sure is an experience!

The epic cold front doesn’t look like giving up any time soon either – it’s still snowing outside now, and the forecast is for more heavy snow right through to next Friday. Temperatures look like staying cold and with moderate west north-westerly winds, conditions should be fantastic for the foreseeable future. This really is shaping up to be a season to remember!

Another day of deep, deep snow in Myoko Kogen – 30~80cm of new snow on top of the huge dump yesterday! Powder boards and fat skis were the order of the day and only the truly adventurous got very far off piste but with powder turns to be had every where, everyone was all frozen smiles!

BELOW: Posing in front of ridiculous snow banks and car pillows is just a part of life in Myoko….

Unbelievably the forecast is for MORE heavy snow tonight, before a weekend of light snow and snow showers followed by MORE heavy snow Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday! This really is one hell of a cold front passing over Japan right now, I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be……
