Back Country Tours

Skiing and snowboarding is just better in the back country. The snow, tranquility and sense of adventure just can’t be matched on piste at a resort. Once you have been into the back country you will be hooked for sure, and Madarao Kogen is a great place to start. Aki Kitamura is a former world cup ski cross Japan representative who now runs a company called Hillman Adventures. His tours take you to the top of Mount Madarao, about thirty minutes walk from the top lift, where on a good day you will get breathtaking panoramic views taking in Myoko, Nozawa, Kijimadaira and Kita Shiga. The tour is aimed at upper intermediate and above skiers and riders. It is a good chance with relatively low risk, for those who think they would like to try skiing in the back-country.

The cost of this tour is 6300 yen pp for a half day tour (includes lift ticket and beacon rental), or 12300 yen pp for a full day tour. Pick up and drop off from Myoko, Nozawa or Shiga can be arranged.
