About
The Myoko Kogen region of Niigata prefecture has long been a place of recreation for the Japanese people in all seasons. The geography of the region is dominated by Mt. Myoko (Myoko-zan) at the surrounding high mountains. The picture below shows the magnificent mountain range and has the main peaks labeled.

In summer the mountains provide a cool escape from the heat and humidity on the plains, in spring the snows melt and reveal a lush pristine environment and in Autumn the changing colors of the leaves make a fantastic natural display. The mountains abound with hiking trails and Lake Nojiriko sparkles in the valley below, as holiday makers enjoy the natural environment and the many onsen in the area.
In winter, the area is blanketed with snow, and the ski resorts come alive. An average of 13 meters of snow falls annually providing great conditions for cruising the groomers or seeking out hidden powder stashes in the trees. There are six main ski areas within the Myoko region, and four of those are nestled around the base of Mt. Myoko and it’s surrounding peaks. The oldest, Akakura Kanko, dates back to the 1930′s and is one of the first ski areas to be developed in Japan. The Akakura Kanko Hotel is positioned almost in the middle of the Akakura Kanko ski area, and sits at 1000 meters above sea level. Go to the mountain page for more information about skiing and snowboarding in Myoko Kogen.
Myoko is also a great place for hot spring lovers. There are 3 different hot spring sources in the area, all originating high on the slopes of Mt. Myoko – it is quite a rarity that so many hot springs would originate so close together. They each have different characteristics, but one thing in common is that they are a great way to relax after a long day on the slopes. Go to the onsen section of the Akakura Onsen village page for more information about where you can enjoy an onsen in the Myoko Kogen area.
During the winter season there are two main festivals in the Myoko area; the “Dontoyaki Yuki Hanabi Matsuri” (snow fireworks festival) and the “Akakura Kamakura Matsuri” (Igloo festival).
The snow fireworks festival is one in which the New Year’s decorations are burnt along with special New Year’s calligraphy to ensure prosperity, good health and a good harvest in the coming year. “Mochi” (pounded rice cakes) and dried squid are roasted over the flames and enjoyed with ample sake.
The igloo festival sees the construction of a huge igloo at the base of the Akakura Kanko gondola with a little shrine inside. Lanterns made of snow are also dotted around the area and people of all ages come to enjoy the magical feeling of being inside such a large igloo and to make prayers in the unique temporary temple.
The Myoko tourist office has produced a “Myoko Area Guide” which is available from the Myoko tourist office (located next to the Myoko Kogen station), or click here to download a PDF version of the guide.
