Festivals

Dontoyaki Yuki Hanabi Matsuri

This festival is one in which the New Year’s decorations are burnt along with special New Year’s calligraphy to ensure prosperity, good health and a good harvest in the coming year. “Mochi” (pounded rice cakes) and dried squid are roasted over the flames and enjoyed with ample sake.

Akakura Kamakura Matsuri

The igloo festival sees the construction of a huge igloo at the base of the Akakura Kanko gondola with a little shrine inside. Lanterns made of snow are also dotted around the area and people of all ages come to enjoy the magical feeling of being inside such a large igloo and to make prayers in the unique temporary temple.

See the slide show below for pictures from the festival held on the 13th and 14th of February 2010
