Restaurants
There are many restaurants serving a wide range of Japanese food at reasonable prices in Nozawa Onsen. The compact nature of the village means that you can get to all of these restaurants relatively easily by foot, from almost any accommodation in town. The restaurants and bars listed on the village map is by no means exhaustive, and we welcome any suggestions or recommendations you may have.
Price guide (approximate)
bowl of noodles: 600-700 yen
set menu: 1000-1200 yen
sushi: 1000-1800 yen
Personal favourites
Hamacho sushi: Authentic sushi bar. You can select which fish you want whilst sitting at the bar and the chef will prepare it right in front of you. The 1000 yen nami set is great value. There are a few types of sushi roll (including the chefs own creation “Jenny roll”) for those not so keen on raw fish.
Masaemon yakitori: Grilled skewers of chicken and mini-leeks with sweet sauce for 100 yen each. The country style boiled potatoes are great too.
Bars
Nozawa definitely isn’t a party town, but there is still a decent choice of bars, each with it’s own unique character. A beer will set you back around 500 yen.
Lunch on the mountain
There is plenty of choice for lunch up on the mountain. The main restaurant areas are on Paradise and Hikage. Expect to pay between 800 and 1200 yen for a meal. Try to avoid the main lunch hour (12-1pm) as it can get very busy, especially on weekends.
Mos burger: Nationwide Japanese fast food joint. The burgers are a bit smaller than what you might expect, but it’s definitely worth a try. Located in the Hikage base station, it is very popular so avoid lunchtime like the plague.
Pasta di Pasta: Great Pasta restaurant on the skiers right of ParadiseRestaurants
