Traditional Accommodation
Masazo has been ran by the same family for around 50 years. Minoru and Shizuko are your hosts, and they do a great job showing the best in Japanese hospitality. Minoru’s policy is to try and have a drink with all his guests at least once and introduce sake from the local area. Shizuko runs the kitchen and breakfast at Masazo is something to look forward too. Fantastic dinners are available too. If you are looking for a place to stay that will be a great Japanese experience at a reasonable cost, it would be hard to find somewhere better than Masazo.
Great Location
Masazo is located just a few hundred metres from the Mukobayashi Cat Track. The centre of town is very close as well, with most of the restaurants, bars and onsens on offer in the village located within 5-10 minutes walk from Masazo.
Fantastic Food
Breakfast is included in all room rates, you can choose Western or Japanese. Staying in and having dinner at Masazo is highly recommended too, you can let them know on the day and they can prepare an evening meal for you (extra charge required).
Getting there and away
Masazo is just a short walk of a few hundred metres up the hill from the Shinden bus stop, which you can reach by direct bus from Nagano or local bus from Togari Nozawa Onsen Station.
Getting to the slopes
The nearest access point is the Mukobayashi cat track, which is about 150m walk from the lodge. From there you can ski down to the Karasawa lifts and access the whole resort. The owner’s son runs Tommi Rentals, a great rental shop across the road from the Nagasaka Gondola and where you can leave your rental equipment (or personal equipment if you are staying at Masazo) to save the walk.
Going out for dinner
Masazo is in a great location very close to some excellent restaurants on the main street. You can also have dinner at the lodge if you wish with the food at Masazo which is highly recommended.
Taking an onsen
There are 3 onsens very close to Masazo, Shinden, Akiha and Juo. Shinden is a good place to start because it is not as hot as some of the other baths (usually!). Juo is a nice big bath but very hot. The bathrooms at Masazo were recently renovated and a nice quiet place for a soak. If you are not keen on public bathing, the baths at Masazo can be locked in off peak periods.
Customer Feedback
We loved Nozawa. While we didn’t get much fresh stuff we cant complain about the blue skies and sun.
Everyone at Masazo looked after us. I could not recommend the place highly enough. Please pass on our heart felt thanks to them.

We (2 adults, 2 kids) had a fabulous 8 days or so at Nozawa and are keen to return. We are interested in other resorts and lodges, but all four of us agreed that we wanted to go back to Masazo.
-Tony
We love Masazo. We stayed their in 2010 too and even the more traditional of our crowd warmed to those epic breakfasts.
-Steve
Lovely hosts, food and rooms. The breakfast was amazing as was our welcome dinner. Felt like we were part of the family the entire stay. Highlight of our japanese adventure.
-Hayden
Brilliant. The rooms were clean exactly what I needed. The food was amazing. The owners were super friendly though they destroyed my last day on the slopes by ‘making’ me drink too much sake.
