Nozawa Onsen: not your average ski resort town
It's a centuries old hot spring village steeped in the timeless tradition of onsens, lots of snow, and the fire festival. Nozawa Onsen Apres starts with an onsen, an unmissable custom which will help the bones recover and warm you to the core when it's dumping down outside. Dinner options are wide and varied, and there is something to please everyone. Whilst Nozawa Onsen isn't really a party town, if you are looking to head out for a drink there are several cosy bars and izakayas to choose from. The village centre is located a very short distance from the ski resort, with houses and lodges stacked close together. Check out the Nozawa Onsen Village Directory for all the info you will need to make the most of your trip.Local Specialities
Onsens
Simply put, onsens are a joy. The onsen in Nozawa are said to date back over 1000 years and were discovered by a hunter. Legend has it he was chasing down a bear with his bow and arrow and partially wounded him. The bear ducked into the bushes to escape and the hunter followed, only to find the bear soothing his injured hand in the therapeutic onsen waters. No-one knows what happened next but it could be assumed that the bear ended up as a rug and the hunter told all his friends about the awesome onsen he found. The onsen in Nozawa are said to be some of the finest in Japan and therapeutic for all kinds of ailments. For more information about onsens in Nozawa, check out our Nozawa Onsen Hot Spring Guide.Sake
Life in the mountains is tough. Imagine getting up at 5 in the morning to shovel a foot of snow before work. You head off for a hard day at the office and return home only to find mother nature has caused a reset and you have to start all over again. It’s no wonder many locals enjoy a glass or two to send their aching bones off to sleep. Even less of a wonder when you find out how good the local drop is. There are two main local sake producers, Mizuo and Hokko. Both are made nearby and apparently Mizuo uses water from a spring on the back side of Kandahar. Mizuo is fruity and sweet and goes down very smoothly, best enjoyed ice cold. Hokko is a lot drier, with a lot more nose. Hokko should be heated up. Both are great sakes and either or both are available in most restaurants in town, or you can buy a big bottle of the cheapest Hokko (which is still excellent) for ¥1800 at the bottle store on the main street.
Although grapes are produced in Nagano the wine is not good at all. There are some microbrewed beers which are a bit pricy but worth a try.
Nozawa-na Pickles
You don’t need to go out of your way to try Nozawa na, it is served with almost every meal in Nozawa. Nozawa na pickles are made from a spinach like plant, which is first boiled in a cooking onsen and then pickled. It is usually served with bonito flakes sprinkled on top. Depending how long it has been pickled for, Nozawa na can be crunchy and fresh or fermented with a slightly fizzy taste (almost like it has been carbonated). No two Nozawa na are quite the same, and it is said that there are as many different kinds of Nozawa na as there are housewifes in Nozawa.
Basashi – horse sushi
This dish doesn’t take much explaining – basashi is thinly sliced raw horse meat served with ginger, garlic and soy sauce. Good basashi is very tender and takes all it’s flavour from the sauce. Basashi is sold in quite a few restaurants in town.
Soba noodles
Soba is a local dish of handmade buckwheat noodles. It is popular throughout Nagano.
Onsen manju
Manju is a sweet treat – almost like a cake – filled with anko (sweet red beans) or roasted chestnuts. They are served hot, steamed in bamboo containers.
Oyaki
Oyaki is another Nagano-wide speciality and a very distinctive site on the main street of Nozawa Onsen. Oyaki are similar to manju but slightly larger and with a wide variety of fillings, some sweet but mostly savoury.
Atarashiya
come here for: yakitori, unagicost: less than ¥1000 for a decent meal
hours: 12pm - 3pm
Atarashiya serves chicken yakitori and unagi kabayaki (grilled eel). It is a really popular place and a must visit for anyone coming to Nozawa. It’s only open for lunch and it is not located on the mountain which makes it a bit inconvenient, but it’s well worth the extra hike if you are having a slow day on the mountain.

Kuan
come here for: Japanese style bar foodcost:
hours: 6pm - late
Kuan is an authentic Japanese style izakaya which is popular with the locals. It’s probably not a great place to go for a meal, rather drop in for a few beers and some snacky type dishes.

Tsukushinbo
come here for: Japanese style bar foodcost: around ¥1500 for a fair amount of food
hours: 6pm - late
Tsukushinbo is an authentic Japanese style izakaya. In Japan the concept of restaurants and bars is a loose one, most are a mix of the two and Tsukushinbo is a perfect example. Rather than each member ordering their own dish, at tsukushinbo you should order a few dishes and snack as you have a drink. You don’t need to order everything up front, you can drag dishes out one at a time if you like and keep the food coming all night. Tsukushinbo is a bit expensive by Nozawa standards and you should probably budget around ¥3000 for a couple of drinks and decent amount of food for one person.
Downstairs across the road from OyuBeen here? Give it a rating:

Yoshimi Soba
come here for: soba noodlescost: less than ¥1000 for a decent bowl of noodles

Next to Ogama onsenBeen here? Give it a rating:
Tatsuya
come here for: Seafoodcost: a selection of fish dishes from ¥400 -¥1000
hours: 6pm - late
Tatsuya is a new restaurant ran by a former chef from one of the ryokans in town. The menu is almost entirely seafood, which is all procured fresh by the owner. The style of this place is a bit different to a normal restaurant, you don’t really come for a meal but rather to have a few drinks while snacking on the beatifully prepared and presented dishes. If you want to try Japanese cuisine with a touch of class and delicacy then Tatsuya is definitely recommended. For those game enough, there is even whale on the menu which could be best described as guilt rackingly delicious!

Billiken
come here for: Italian, Izakaya farecost: Around ¥1500 for a decent meal
hours: lunchtime and 5pm - late
Billiken is an izakaya with a seemingly endless menu full of variety. The western stuff is actually probably a bit better than the Japanese, especially the pizza and humungous pasta. Probably best not to attempt to polish of a plate of pasta yourself.
Next to Ogama onsenBeen here? Give it a rating:
Bun Bun
come here for: Sukiyaki, Nabe, Shabu Shabucost: ¥2500 for a feast
hours: dinnertime booking required
I couldn’t believe it the first time I had dinner at Bun Bun, the volume and quality of food is outstanding and it really is highly recommended for anyone visiting Nozawa. The cost is on the high side, but it is probably fair considering the amount of food you get. You can choose sukiyaki, shabu shabu or nabe, all of which come with a seemingly endless run of side dishes. Bun Bun is right on the slopes so pop in a day in advance while you are up the mountain to make a booking.
On the main road leading up to the Nagasaka Gondola, it's right in front of the ski field.Been here? Give it a rating:
Jonnobi
come here for: dinner course menucost: From ¥3000 for a set meal
hours: 5pm - 8pm
Jonnobi has the ambience and location to be something special, offering a class above anything else available in Nozawa. Unfortunately the service and polish doesn’t quite seem to be there yet, but it could be worth a try. It is still very cheap by international standard for a very high level of dining.

Shijukara
come here for: Tan tan men, ramen, yakitoricost: Less than ¥1000 for a good sized bowl of noodles
hours: 9pm - late
Shijukara is located right across the road from 3 of Nozawas bars – the perfect stop for a late night bowl of tan tan men noodles to fill the gap. The noodles are almost legendary in Nozawa – think spicy ramen with a gelatanous meaty sauce and some Nozawa na pickles thrown in for good measure. You will either love it or hate it. If insects are your thing, Shijukara also has a few of them on the menu as well as frogs and rabbit (if you order in advance). The Yakitori at Shijukara is a less controversial choice, tender chicken peices and spring leeks smothered in a delicious sweet soy yakitori sauce go down a treat with almost everyone.

Himatsuri
come here for: drinks, barfoodcost: drinks from ¥600
hours: 5pm - late
Himatsuri raises the bar to a new level for Nozawa Onsen. It was built a few seasons back and obviously a lot of money was spent with the goal of creating atmosphere and ambience. They did a really good job, possibly too good as it isn’t the sort of place where you feel comfortable walking in with an onsen basket and towel hanging around your neck, which probably alienates around 50% of their potential walk-in customers. If you want to have a night out in a trendy Japanese bar, Himatsuri is definitely worth the trip.

Dimension is a small but well stocked snowboard shop run by Takeshi, a Nozawa local who board during the day and runs his shop in the evening. He really knows his snowboards and has a good selection including plenty of fish and other powder machines. The prices are not what you would expect for a small shop at the end of the road in a ski resort, and everything seems to be eternally on sale for 20% off.
